Echoes of Erosion

Instruments of Sound and Dissolved Territories
Dunbeg, Scotland

Echoes of Erosion Sound Park is an immersive architectural and auditory landscape that weaves together the urgency of climate emergency and the preservation of cultural heritage. The project comprises a series of interventions that employ traditional Scottish music and environmental sounds to create a deeply resonant, multi-sensory experience. The design interventions have been placed along a section of Scotland’s vulnerable coastline, at points most susceptible to erosion.

The sound park draws a connection between the collective effort required to maintain cultural traditions - such as passing down music and dance referring to the Scottish landscape - and the similarly hard work needed to protect fragile coastal environments. As natural forces reshape the landscape, the acoustic properties of each space change, revealing the acoustic imprint of erosion over time and the architecture becomes both instrument and witness, evolving with the landscape.

Constructed with layered soil mixes of varying durability, the interventions are designed to erode gradually, embracing the passage of time and allowing decay to shape each space. What remains is a sculpted amphitheatre-like terrain open to public gathering and reflection - serving both as a communal ground and a poetic reminder of impermanence.

Rejecting Western ideals of permanence and control, the project is a celebration of inevitable transformation of the world around us embracing entropy as a form of beauty and healing.
