AIR, ARCHITECTURE + OTHER CLIMATES

Design Studio 18 - Studio as Book 2019 - 2023

Edited by Laura Nica, John Cook and Ben Pollock

This second edition of studio-as-book documents the period between 2019 to 2023 of Design Studio 18 (DS18) at the University of Westminster, tutored by John Cook, Ben Pollock and Laura Nica. This book contains an edited selection of student work, serving as a record of their explorations carried out under our investigations of Air, Atmosphere and Other Climates, supported by a series of writings and reflections from our peers, collaborators and past students engaged with the studio over this period.

Under this theme, the studio explored the role and possibilities of architecture through the material framing of air, amongst the wider context of atmospheric change and our global climate and ecological emergency. This framing would direct the studios siting around the Arctic regions, through the vast latitudinal stretches of Norway, and across the breadth of the UK, explored through aerial design methodologies encompassing atmospheric mapping, computational fluid simulation, and novel forms of representation.
