Moss & Mire

Moss & Mire is focused on habitat creation and maintenance of wetland vegetation. Located on Higher Moors, the project proposes regular, live observation of restoration progress on-site. Drawing inspiration from this, the project programme focuses on sphagnum moss, an essential species for healthy peat formation. Its cultivation will be completed in phases by researchers and volunteers, dispatching batches locally across the mire.


Rewetting is the most effective method of wetland restoration. Hence, the project is centred on the hydrological cycle as the primary means to restore levels of bog moss to encourage peat accumulation. The building itself acts as a surface bund, accumulating and collecting minerotrophic water sources (surface water run-off and rainwater) to be collected and distributed throughout the year and phases of restoration. Over time, water will form pond conditions at the building’s edges, creating new habitat formation for key plant and animal species.
