Isle of Scilly, St Agnes, Bryher, Tresco, and St Martin Island, UK


The Isles of Scilly presents a compelling prototype for testing opportunistic electricity grid interventions due to its relative isolation from the mainland energy network. This separation creates a condition of both vulnerability and autonomy, allowing the archipelago to operate as a real-world experimental ground for alternative energy infrastructures. Rather than being understood as a limitation, the islands’ detachment becomes an asset: a low risk, yet highly responsive environment, in which relationships between energy production, storage, and consumption can be observed, tested, and refined for broader future application.

Within this context, the four architectural proposals operate not as isolated objects, but as interconnected nodes within a wider micro-grid ecology. Each intervention is embedded within the outlying island’s existing electrical network, responding to local patterns of demand, infrastructural conditions, and social activity. The projects integrate public programmes that support the everyday lives of the Isles of Scilly community, while simultaneously acting as pedagogical instruments that make energy systems visible, participatory, and publicly legible.
