Preservation of Heritage Through Salt and Time
Isles of Scilly, Tresco Island, UK

Situated within the fragile coastal landscape of Tresco, this project explores new approaches to preserving heritage through environmental processes and collective participation. Responding to the accelerating impact of salt-laden winds on the island’s historic granite fortifications, the proposal reconsiders salt not only as an agent of decay but as a material capable of growth, repair, and renewal.

The scheme establishes a learning landscape where weathering and salt crystallisation become tools for conservation. Through cycles of extraction, transformation, and construction, volunteers actively participate in the care and maintenance of the historic fabric, working with locally sourced granite in a manner that recalls traditional building practices while supporting low-carbon construction. Rather than treating heritage as a fixed condition, the project proposes conservation as an ongoing practice of stewardship, where architecture works with environmental time and the future of Tresco’s historic landscape is sustained through labour, participation, and continual renewal.
